Modern or Historical: Which Will Light the Way in Raleigh?

Going Green to Save Green or Save the History? Which will Raleigh choose to light the town?
old

The new trend in construction, commercial or residential, is to build the most eco-friendly structure possible. Most of the time eco-friendly equals saving money (in the long run) which is the main incentive to go green. The city of Raleigh is taking steps to not only save money but save the planet by installing energy-saving streetlights in most parts of town. The city is replacing about 30,000 streetlights with LED bulbs and fixtures. LED lights last longer and use up to 85% less energy than other bulbs saving the city at least $400,000 each year after installation.

While this may sound like a no brainer some residents are not on board with this change. Many residents in the some of the older neighborhoods are objecting to the lights because they are too bright and modern for the old, character-rich sections of the City of Oaks. While the current lights in historic neighborhoods like Boylan Heights, Oakwood and Blount Street are not considered historic they are a better option than the modern LED bulbs which have a modern look.
