Furniture Tips for Small Spaces

Furniture Tips for Small Spaces

With the economy returning, everyone wants to live large. In today’s society, bigger is better. A 72″ plasma TV? Absolutely necessary. Massive SUV? Check. Even homes and furniture sizes are exploding. But this “Go big or go home” approach doesn’t work for everyone, especially those who are already cramped for space.

If you’re living in a smaller space, the best way to furnish it is to identify then play to the strengths of your space and its size. When it comes time to decorate your space, consider the following tips:

Decorating Scheme. You should choose an AFFORDABLE decorating scheme that complements your home. Doing this will allow you to develop and build on your style as you go along.

Throwback. Thanks to amazing websites like Pinterest and an endless list of consignment furniture and decor stores, everyone loves vintage. So, go old school with your style. Furniture from earlier eras is usually smaller in size and often available at much cheaper prices from flea markets, thrift stores and garage sales rather than a new set from IKEA.

Say goodbye to the unnecessary. When you’re cramped for space, all you really needs is the essentials–a place to sit, to eat and to sleep. Once you get the basics in, then you can evaluate and decide if you actually need that massive ottoman that caught your eye the other day.

Draw it out. Sit down and draw your home to scale, and make sure to take note of the locations of power outlets, phone lines, windows, doors, fireplaces, and bar areas. Measure out the dimensions of your space, and make sure to figure out the size of a piece of furniture BEFORE you purchase.

Find a do-it-all. Buy furniture that is multifunctional; oftentimes, you can find pieces like these at companies that specialize in furniture for small spaces. Consider buying a Murphy bed or a couch that can fold into a table.

Bring it back. Refurbish your furniture that fits to add a bit of flair to your space. A small antique table with an interesting shape and polished patina can take on new importance. A color backdrop on a wall or a piece of fabric used as a throw can draw the eye wherever you want it to. If in doubt, throw it out.

Think outside the box. Always try to look at spaces in a new light. Is there room for a desk under that dormer window or in that corner by the stairs? Can that sloping ceiling accommodate at bookcase underneath? Go for untraditional arrangements if they will work better in your space.

Less is more. You can add drama to a room by having large-scale furniture, but fewer pieces.

Throw it away. Reduce clutter. The more room you have to move around the more spacious your apartment will feel. Decorative hooks are an apartment dweller’s best friend and can be used to hang pots and pans. Shelves can really maximize space and add to the ambiance of your apartment.
